Tree Trimming & Pruning
Deadwood, clearance and crown work that keeps a healthy tree healthy.
Get a Quote →Storm-damaged, creek-side, beetle-killed and lakefront trees taken down safely across Cumming and Forsyth County — with the city’s stream-buffer rules and the Corps’ Lake Lanier rules handled properly. About twenty minutes from our Buford yard, with our own crew and crane.
Inside the Cumming city limits, the rule that most often changes a removal is not a tree rule at all — it is the stream buffer. Plenty of Cumming lots back onto a creek, and the strip along its banks has its own protections. On the lake side, it is the Corps line. We work out both before we quote.
R & R Tree Service provides tree removal in Cumming, GA, from our yard at 1381 Buford Highway in Buford — family-owned since 1987, TCIA members, licensed, bonded and insured. Dead pines are the other common call here: a crown fading from green to yellow to red-brown, with pitch tubes on the bark, is a removal to schedule now rather than after it drops. Call (678) 482-9994 for a free estimate.

Be careful within 75 feet of the bank. The City of Cumming's stream buffer rules require a 50-foot undisturbed natural vegetative buffer on both banks, measured from the top of the stream bank, plus a further 25-foot setback in which all impervious cover is prohibited. They apply to land development activity on property containing a stream protection area.
Existing development and ongoing landscaping, gardening and lawn maintenance are grandfathered, so an ordinary removal at an existing home is not treated like new development — but grading, a new patio or clearing inside the strip is. We confirm with the city before cutting inside the buffer, and take buffer trees out in pieces with as little disturbance as possible.
Rules change. Confirm anything load-bearing with the local office before you cut — we do that check as part of every quote.
Emergency work to protect life or property is exempt from Cumming’s stream buffer rules — but the person doing it has to report the work to the zoning administrator on the next business day and apply for a permit within ten days. When we clear a storm tree from a creek-side lot, we photograph and describe the work so that report is easy to make.
Cumming’s zoning chapter covers stream buffer protection but has no stand-alone tree-protection article; tree conditions mostly come through land disturbance and development permits handled by City Planning & Zoning. Unincorporated Forsyth addresses fall under the county’s own ordinance, which our Cumming area page covers. Check with the right office before a large removal.
If a Shoreline Use Permit already covers mowing an area of Corps land and a tree falls into it, you can cut it up and scatter it in an unmaintained part of government land nearby without a separate permit. If there is nowhere to scatter it and you want it hauled away, you need a Specified Act Permit first.
Georgia’s High-Voltage Safety Act keeps a tree crew and its equipment at least ten feet from lines over 750 volts until the utility has had 72 hours’ notice, weekends and holidays excluded, and has made the line safe. A tree leaning over the street line therefore takes a few extra days to schedule, and we file the notice when you book.

Yes. Emergency work to protect life or property is allowed, but Cumming’s code says it must be reported to the zoning administrator the next business day, with a permit application within ten days. We document what was done so the report is straightforward.
The city’s zoning chapter has no separate tree article; tree conditions mostly come through land disturbance and development permits handled by City Planning & Zoning. Unincorporated Forsyth is covered by the county ordinance on our Cumming area page. Check with the right office for your address before a large removal.
Yes, if a Shoreline Use Permit already covers mowing that area: cut it up and scatter it in an unmaintained part of government land nearby. If you want it hauled away instead, you need a Specified Act Permit first.
Coverage is between you and your insurer. What helps is the record the Corps itself asks for: several photos, a specific list of what was damaged and a call to the Park Ranger so an incident report is made. You can cut the tree off the house at the property line straight away.
Allow a few extra days. A tree company cannot bring crew or equipment within ten feet of a high-voltage line until the utility has had at least 72 hours’ notice and made the line safe. We file that notice when you book.
