Tree Trimming & Pruning
Deadwood, clearance and crown work that keeps a healthy tree healthy.
Get a Quote →Dead, leaning or storm-loosened trees taken down safely across Buford, on the Gwinnett side and the Hall side alike. Our yard is on Buford Highway, so your job is a short run for our own crew, our own equipment and, when the tree is over the house, our own crane.
Most Buford removals we are called to are one of three trees: a pine that has started to brown from the top, an oak that has gone hollow while the crown still looks full, or a tree that was fine inside a wooded stand until the lot next door was cleared and it was suddenly carrying the wind on its own. Each one comes down differently, and the quote should say how.
R & R Tree Service provides tree removal in Buford, GA, from our yard at 1381 Buford Highway in Buford — family-owned since 1987, TCIA members, licensed, bonded and insured. We quote at the tree, for free, and the price includes taking the wood and brush away — which matters in Buford, because the city will not pick up debris left by tree work. Not at an existing home, in most cases. Hall County's tree protection rules do not apply to a property already occupied by an owner-occupied single-family home, unless a non-residential use is being proposed. Where they do apply — land that is being developed — removing a significant tree, or any tree ten inches across or larger inside the tree protection zone, needs a permit and an approved tree protection plan.
Two exceptions are worth knowing. The county waives the permit where it decides a tree is dead, diseased or infested enough that removal is necessary, or damaged by lightning, wind or ice badly enough to endanger public safety. And lakefront lots carry separate undisturbed buffers along Lake Lanier and other state waters, which apply even where the tree rules do not. For the rules inside the City of Buford and in unincorporated Gwinnett, see our Buford area page.
Rules change. Confirm anything load-bearing with the local office before you cut — we do that check as part of every quote.
A Buford mailing address can sit inside the city, in unincorporated Gwinnett or in Hall County, and each has its own rulebook for taking a tree down. Hall decides "significant" by size: oaks, hickories, pines and cedars from 18 inches across, and dogwoods, redbuds and sourwoods from 8 inches. That mostly matters on land being built on, but we check the jurisdiction before every quote so nobody finds out afterwards.
Ips bark beetles can go from egg to adult in under three weeks, and UGA Extension is plain that a colonised pine cannot be saved by insecticide. Drought and storm damage are what draw them in, and a dying pine is where the next generation hatches. Look for small blobs of resin on the bark plates, fine boring dust at the base, or a crown going yellow and then red-brown. That tree is not a wait-and-see.
The City of Buford will not collect commercial material such as tree work at the curb; debris from a contractor has to be disposed of by the contractor or the owner. A cheap quote that leaves a pile of logs in your drive is not cheap. Ours includes chipping the brush and hauling the wood, unless you want the rounds stacked for firewood.
Plenty of Buford lots slope down toward Lake Lanier or a creek, and getting a chipper or a loader to the trunk is half the job. On a steep lot we often bring the tree down in sections and carry the pieces up rather than drop it downhill into a buffer or a neighbour’s fence.
The corridor around the Mall of Georgia and I-985 has been cleared and rebuilt hard. Trees that grew up inside a stand, and are now the last ones standing on a new lot line, carry wind loads they never built wood for. We look at the root plate and the lean, not just the leaves, when we decide whether one of those stays.

Usually not at your own home. Hall County's tree protection rules do not apply to property already occupied by an owner-occupied single-family home. They do apply to land being developed, where removing a significant tree, or any tree ten inches across or larger, needs a permit. Lakefront lots also have separate buffer rules along Lake Lanier.
On size alone: oaks, hickories, pines and cedars 18 inches or more in diameter at chest height, and dogwoods, redbuds and sourwoods 8 inches or more. A tree also has to be in fair or better condition to count. It mostly matters on land being developed rather than at an existing home.
Usually not. UGA Extension says Ips bark beetles can complete a generation in under three weeks and that insecticide cannot save a tree once they are in it, and removing damaged pines promptly lowers the chance of the beetles moving to the next tree. We will look at it for free and tell you honestly whether it is beetles or something else.
No. The city does not collect debris from tree work, so it has to be removed by the contractor or the owner. Our quote includes chipping the brush and hauling the wood away. If you would rather keep the wood for firewood, or have it chipped for mulch, just say so.
It can make it simpler. In Hall County the permit requirement is waived where the county decides a tree is dead, diseased or infested enough that it needs to come out, or storm-damaged enough to be a safety risk. Inside the City of Buford there is a notice step first, which our Buford area page explains.
Most single residential removals are done in a day, often in a few hours. A tree wedged between a house, a fence and a power drop takes longer because it comes down in controlled sections, sometimes with our crane. You get a realistic timeframe with your free estimate.
When it is dead, dying past recovery or structurally failing: major dieback in the top of the crown, mushrooms or conks at the base, a fresh lean with soil lifting on one side, or big dead limbs over the house, drive or play area. A tree that is merely crowded or thinned by one dry summer is usually a trimming job, and we will tell you so.
That is your insurer's decision and depends on the policy and what the tree hit. What helps any claim is a clear record: photos before anything is moved, a description of the damage and a written description of the work. We provide the photos and the written scope with every storm removal.
